WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
“It was great, especially after talking with the girls and seeing how
optimistic and energetic they were. It was as if they could sense
that the world was at their fingertips – like they knew they were the
future of Iraq.”
-Army Sgt. Amanda Timmer, who helped set up an Internet center for
the Kut Girls Secondary School in Iraq.

TODAY'S FOCUS
Activation of the 172nd Infantry Brigade in U.S. Army, Europe
(USAREUR) and Seventh Army
What is it?
The activation of the 172nd Infantry Brigade allows the Army to stay
on track with the “Grow the Army” plan, keep an experienced combat
brigade in the fight, and take care of Families at the same time.
Although it only recently returned from a 15 month tour in Iraq, the
brigade is already busy preparing for its next mission, while
simultaneously moving part of the brigade from Schweinfurt to
Grafenwoehr, Germany.
What has the Army done?
As part of the “Grow the Army” plan and the ongoing USAREUR
transformation, USAREUR is transferring the unit designations,
lineage, flags and other heraldic items belonging to 2nd Brigade, 1st
Infantry Division and its subordinate units in Schweinfurt to U.S.
Army Forces Command. The unit’s Soldiers and equipment will remain in
place and activate as the 172nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team
effective March 16. The 172nd Brigade will include the following
subordinate units:
- Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 172nd Infantry Brigade
(formed from HHC, 2-1 ID)
- 2nd Battalion, 28th Infantry (formed from 1-26 Infantry)
- 1st Battalion, 2nd Infantry (formed from 1-18 Infantry)
- 3rd Battalion, 66th Armor (formed from 1-77 Armor)
- Troop E, 5th Cavalry (formed from Troop E, 4th Cavalry)
- 1st Battalion, 77th Field Artillery (formed from 1-7 Field Artillery)
- 172nd Support Battalion (formed from 299th Support Battalion)
Why is this important to the Army?
This reflagging is a critical step in the “Grow the Army” campaign.
It will help the Army by using critical existing infrastructure in
Europe, while new infrastructure is built in the United States to
grow the six new combat brigades. In September 2010, the 2nd Brigade,
1st Armored Division is also scheduled to activate as the 170th
Infantry Brigade when it returns from its upcoming deployment to Iraq.
The Army still plans to relocate 1st Armored Division Headquarters
from Germany to Fort Bliss, Texas, by September 2011 while
redesignating its two Brigade Combat Teams and extending their
presence in Europe until 2012 and 2013. At that time both brigades
are currently scheduled to return to CONUS
