SENIOR LEADERS ARE SAYING

"All Soldiers in our Army are qualified to serve. And field commanders are
very pleased with the men and women now serving in their formations; some of
whom are not high school diploma graduates or may have received a waiver to
serve in our Army."

- Maj. Gen. Thomas P. Bostick, commander, U.S. Army Accessions Command

TODAY'S FOCUS

Medical Care PM As the Backbone of AM

What is it?
Facilities and equipment managers know the acronym "PM" as Preventive
Maintenance. If you think of Army Maintenance as "AM," it can help you
remember to keep your "PM" in the right place with your "AM." Maintenance is
absolutely critical to Army readiness and nowhere has that become more clear
than in the care, support and services the Army provides to its Warriors in
Transition (WTs) and their Families.

Brief history:
* Facilities maintenance failures adversely affected the Army's excellent
reputation for quality care and support, of its Soldiers and their Families.
* The maintenance issues led to immediate investigation.
* Preventive Maintenance practices findings revealed necessary changes.
* Army leaders supported the revitalization effort.

What has the Army done?
Almost immediately, WTs and their Families relocated to better
accommodations. They received priority placement in military housing and
that housing was renovated to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
standards. Housing and other WT facilities maintenance procedures also
underwent nearly immediate revision.
* More stringent monitoring and reporting.
* Established Rapid Response Team for 24/7 housing area repairs.
* Maintenance and construction funds prioritized to benefit WTs and
Families.

What continued efforts does the Army have planned for the future?
Assess the PM process, and maintenance management overall, applying best
practices, to give our WTs and Families the best environments for healing.
This includes designing new maintenance procedures, where necessary, and
upgrading existing practices. Listen more to WTs and Families, as well as
caregivers and cadre, to identify maintenance areas requiring more
attention. The Army also wants to develop, and implement, training and
certification procedures for maintenance leaders in the medical community.

Why is this important to the Army?
Army readiness suffers if Army Maintenance suffers. Preventive Maintenance
is the backbone of the Army's overall maintenance program because PM alerts
leaders to the serviceability and potential lifespan of their facilities, or
equipment. That information tells leaders where resources need to be focused
and, especially, how well the Army lives up to its promise, to WTs and
Families, to provide Quality of Life equal to their sacrifices to the
nation, and the Army.
