SENIOR LEADERS ARE SAYING
"In these dangerous times, the United States is blessed to have
extraordinary and selfless men and women willing to step forward and defend
us. These young Americans understand that our cause in Iraq is noble and
necessary and that the advance of freedom is the calling of our
time."-President George W. Bush said during his televised White House
address, January 10, 2007.
TODAY'S FOCUS
Army Center for Health Promotion & Preventive Medicine (USACHPPM)
What is it? USACHPPM is the Army's public health organization, focused on
reducing the incidence of preventable diseases, medical conditions and
non-battle injuries. With approximately 1,000 military and civilian
personnel, it is headquartered in Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD., with
regionally-focused subordinate commands in Japan, Europe, and Forts Lewis,
McPherson and Meade.
What is the Army doing? USACHPPM provides environmental, epidemiological and
occupational health surveillance; injury and disease prevention programs;
hospital and field preventive medicine services; health risk assessment;
related laboratory analyses; and health education everywhere Soldiers go.
With the stresses and operational tempo of today's deployments, potential
for exposure to unusual diseases and environmental conditions significantly
increases. Troops are threatened by tuberculosis, malaria, leishmaniasis and
diseases associated with indigenous animals; chronic, lifestyle diseases;
and illnesses related to exposure to industrial materials and pesticides.
Troops deploy to locations where soil, air, water and even the food may
present new health threats. Weaponry and equipment present inherent risks to
hearing and vision. For example at home in garrison, buildings, roads,
property and waterways all pose health threats, as can national disasters.
All require the agile public health solutions USACHPPM provides.
Why is this important? The health of our military and civilian personnel is
essential for readiness. Preventing diseases, non-battle injuries and
conditions that threaten Soldier and civilian health is more operationally
sound, more cost effective and certainly easier for individual Soldier
well-being than even the world-class medical treatment the Army provides its
war-fighters. Early identification and mitigation of health risks to our
people through surveillance, education and training is as crucial to our
success as the preventive maintenance is for our equipment. With its breadth
and depth of expertise, USACHPPM is able to respond both locally and project
globally, providing an efficient mechanism of force health protection for
Army assets around the world.
