SENIOR LEADERS ARE SAYING
"It's the least the American people can do to recognize those of our
Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen who have been willing
to step forward to serve the nation, serve the cause of peace, freedom and
democracy around the world." -Retired Army Gen. Colin Powell, presenting
Purple Heart Medals to wounded Soldiers at Walter Reed, July 7.
TODAY'S FOCUS
29th Annual Secretary of the Army Energy and Water Management Awards
What is it? The Secretary of the Army Energy and Water Management Awards
Program was established in 1979 to recognize installations and individuals
from the Army, the Army Corps of Engineers, Army Reserve, and Army National
Guard who make significant achievements in energy conservation and water
management. Categories for the award include Energy Efficiency/Energy
Management, Innovation and New Technology, Renewable Energy, Alternative
Financing, Water Conservation, Program Effectiveness, and Individual
Achievement.
What has the Army done? The Army today awarded 10 installations and
individuals for their dedication, hard work, ingenuity and success in
improving the Army's energy future by improving efficiency and reducing
greenhouse gases; using new, clean renewable technologies; and promoting
energy awareness. These installations and individuals are: Fort Knox, Ky.;
Fort Detrick, Md.; Rock Island Arsenal, Ill.; Camp Shelby, Miss. (MSARNG);
Fort Stewart, Ga.; U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach, Germany; U.S. Army Garrison
Hessen (Hanau), Germany; U.S. Army Garrison Benelux, Belgium; Mr. Ernst
Kusiak, U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden, Germany; and Mr. Scott Naeseth, Fort
McCoy, Wis. (USAR).
Why is this important to the Army? Sustainability is a national security
imperative; through improving effectiveness of our force and preserving
resources, we are setting the example for the rest of the nation.
Sustainable practices and technologies lead to an Army with more teeth and
less tail. This award greatly enhances installation command emphasis,
encourages good stewardship of energy resources and reinforces the
importance of meeting the Army's energy reduction goals. Our military
capability and combat effectiveness depend on these resources. Inefficiency
and waste deplete funds that could be applied to multiplying our combat
power and caring for Families. Our over-reliance on fossil fuels and
offshore energy sources jeopardizes our security and limits our freedom to
act in the global environment. Now, more than ever, we must counter our
wasteful behaviors and processes; reduce our expenses in purchasing energy
and operating our utility systems by improved higher efficiency equipment
and the use of new technologies and renewable energy.
