TODAY'S FOCUS

The Army's 'Enthusiasm and Faith'
By Gen. Peter Schoomaker

When asked why "people still kept up Memorial Day," Civil War veteran and
future Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. responded that "it
celebrates and solemnly reaffirms from year to year a national act of
enthusiasm and faith."

The enthusiasm of which Holmes spoke was not a zeal for war. Instead he was
talking about a passion to serve. Nor was he alluding to religious faith.
Faith, he noted, is a willingness "to commit yourself to a course, perhaps a
long and hard one, without being able to foresee exactly where you will come
out."

We continue to honor this enthusiasm and faith, and do so while the country
is engaged in battle in Iraq, Afghanistan, and elsewhere. In fact, like
those in generations past who have worn the American uniform, today's
Soldiers are imbued with what we call the Warrior Ethos and are motivated by
an unwavering belief that they will be victorious on the field of battle
because the Nation requires nothing less. These young men and women
symbolize the nobility of selfless service to our country.

Of course, Memorial Day is not focused on the living. Rather, it is
dedicated to those who, as President Lincoln so eloquently reminded us, have
given their "last full measure of devotion."

Army Equipping and Reuse Conference 5.0 (AERC 5.0)

What is it? The Army Equipping and Reuse Conference (AERC), formerly known
as the Army Equipping Conference (AEC), is a semi-annual ARSTAF, Army
command, and ASCC level conference in which the Army's force developers
convene to discuss how to employ all available equipment in the Army
inventory, whether new or used, to fill formations as the Army fights and
transforms. AERC is the fifth such conference the Army has conducted to
date.

What is the Army doing? The next AERC is scheduled for June 5-9 at Fort
Belvoir.
