TODAY'S FOCUS
Battle Command

What is it? Battle Command is the art and science of applying
leadership and decision making to achieve mission success. Battle
Command leverages and integrates initiatives and technologies to
deliver information superiority to the Warfighter across the entire
force. Battle Command consists of communications and networking
solutions that enable better control of our Soldiers and units as
well as an ability to make critical decisions faster than the enemy
can respond. These solutions apply to all levels of the Army - from
the squad to the highest headquarters.

What has the Army done? By applying the lessons learned in combat,
the Army has improved both Army and Joint Force battle command
capabilities and provides commanders with capabilities they have
never had before. The Joint Network Node Communications extends
voice, video and internet protocol-based services down to the
maneuver battalion level increasing the connectivity of this unit by
five times compared to earlier organizational designs. Blue Force
Tracker allows commanders to “see” the battlefield more accurately by
telling them the location of all units in the area. Command Post of
the Future is an executive level decision support system that
provides situational awareness and collaborative tools to support
decision making, planning, and rehearsal and execution management for
commanders and staff. The Army Modular Design construct requires the
capability to conduct dispersed and dismounted combat operations in
all environments. To enable this concept, the Army is using secure
hand-held multi-band small unit radios to provide enhanced capability
to the Soldier.

What efforts does the Army plan to continue in the future? The Army
will continue to work with the other Services to improve battle
command. We are moving toward a single Joint Command and Control
architecture. Our concept of the Future Army Modular Force relies on
a concept for networked Battle Command capability.

INFORMATION YOU CAN USE
Army Safety-"Owning the Edge"

To help modern leaders and Soldiers make informed choices, the,U.S.
Army Combat Readiness Center developed a campaign called Own the
Edge. This campaign, encourages individual and unit safety, as well
as continuous risk evaluation and hazard mitigation through the use
of CRM. Our Soldiers are warriors on the edge. "Own the Edge" implies
that Soldiers can push themselves to the limit while maintaining
control, thus giving them an advantage in any situation. CRM enables
them to think smarter, take control, and actually “Own the Edge.”
