TODAY'S FOCUS

On-line Language Training for all Soldiers and Army Civilians with Rosetta
Stone ®

What is it? On-line language training in 30 languages
using Rosetta Stone on Army e-Learning is available to all 1.4 million Army
Active, Guard, and Reserve Soldiers as well as all Army Civilian employees, USMA
and ROTC contracted cadets for professional and personal development. Lessons
are self-paced and active-duty Soldiers earn one promotion point for each five
hours of training credit completed while reserve Soldiers earn one retirement
point for each three hours of training credit completed. Rosetta Stone’s
learning method combines interactive technology with native speakers and a rich
visual environment to mimic the complete immersion process used to learn your
first language. This method makes it easy for soldiers with no previous language
experience or outside help to begin language learning. The 30 languages
available include the “investment” languages— Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Pashto,
Korean, and Hindi—the U.S. Department of Defense deems critical to national
security.

What has the Army done? Available on Army e-Learning
since November 2005, 115,000 Soldiers have spent 600,000 hours studying Rosetta
Stone’s 30 languages. In just the three OIF and OEF related languages (Arabic,
Farsi, and Pashto), Soldiers have completed 90,000 hours of language training.
In May 2007, the Army expanded Rosetta Stone options to include a network
version for a single language for units deployed to locations with unreliable
Internet access that could be loaded on the unit’s computers. Twenty units in
Iraq and Afghanistan have requested licenses for 300 such computers. The Army
also provides access to Rosetta Stone language training to both Army and
non-Army students at all Army schools that include language training as part of
the curriculum.

What continuing efforts does the Army have
planned? With the Army’s encouragement, Rosetta Stone developed a new
version of Arabic with a military focus that includes 123 military terms and a
focus on military language tasks such as talking with civilians at a vehicle
checkpoint, reacting to an IED attack, and training allied soldiers. This new
Arabic Military version, available only online, was released on Army e-Learning
Nov. 19, 2007.

Why is this important to the Army? The war,
overseas deployment, and basing of Army forces continually reflect the need for
every Soldier to have some foundational language to communicate with people they
will interact with overseas. The Army on-line language training provides a tool
that every Soldier and Civilian can use at work or at home for personal or
professional development.

For more information on the Army Rosetta Stone
