<H2>TODAY'S FOCUS</H2>
<P><B>United States Northern Command Turns 5 and United States Army North
Reaches 1 Year Full Operational Capability</B><BR><BR><B>What is it?</B> After
the events of Sept. 11, 2001, United States Northern Command was established to
integrate military homeland defense efforts and to respond to natural and
manmade disasters by providing defense support of civil authorities. Today, the
command marks its fifth year as the defender of our homeland. <BR><BR>In 2004,
United States Army North was conceived to execute many Northern Command
missions. Since then, Army North has been developing plans, participating in
exercises and conducting partnership activities with the armies of Canada and
Mexico as part of its homeland defense, civil support and theater security
cooperation missions. <BR><BR><B>What has U.S. Northern Command and U.S. Army
North done?</B> Northern Command, along with Army North, has conducted an array
of homeland defense and civil support missions, including responding to the
Shuttle Columbia disaster, supporting Hurricanes Katrina and Rita response,
monitoring the 2006 North Korean missile launches, and supporting recovery
operations for the recent I-35 bridge collapse in Minneapolis.<BR><BR>Army North
trains in numerous Northern Command and other exercises to remain <B>Strong in
Support</B> of civil authorities, become <B>Stronger for Peace</B> and homeland
defense, and maintain <B>Strength through Partnership</B> with the armies of
Canada and Mexico. Ten Defense Coordinating Elements, each led by a Defense
Coordinating Officer, work daily with the regional Federal Emergency Management
Agency offices to plan and prepare civil support operations.<BR><BR>Army North
also trains National Guard Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Teams,
which are state first responders to assess chemical, biological, radiological,
nuclear, and high-yield explosive incidents. <BR><BR><B>What efforts will U.S.
Northern Command and the U.S. Army North do in the future?</B> Northern Command
will continue to constantly challenge “the way it is.” It will continue to
refine and transform what it does so that it can make the appropriate decisions
during any crisis or contingency. It will continue to seek and aggressively
advocate solutions for the nation. Army North has developed a long-term command
strategy to achieve its vision as the “go-to” headquarters to lead, coordinate
and support DOD land domain operations in the Northern Command area of
responsibility. <BR><BR><B>Why are U.S. Northern Command and U.S. Army North
important to the nation?</B> Northern Command is responsible for integrating
military homeland defense efforts for the nation and for responding to natural
and manmade disasters in support of civil authorities to save lives, prevents
loss and to relieve suffering. As the Army service component command of Northern
Command, Army North is an experienced land domain headquarters for homeland
defense and civil support to protect the American people and our way of life.
